In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, breadcrumbs, minced garlic, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, fresh parsley, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Mix gently with your hands until just combined, being careful not to overwork the mixture.
Shape the mixture into 16-20 meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter, and place them on a parchment paper-lined tray.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Working in batches to avoid overcrowding, brown the meatballs on all sides for about 6-8 minutes total, then transfer to a plate.
In the same skillet, add diced onion and sauté for 2 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
Pour in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, pepper, and a pinch of sugar. Stir well to combine.
Return the meatballs to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook uncovered for 15-18 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and meatballs are cooked through.
Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and fresh basil if desired. Serve hot over pasta, rice, or with fresh bread.
